Ashley J MacDonald: Indigenous Sculptural Furniture & Design
Ashley J MacDonald is a visionary Cayuga and Austrian furniture designer and the founder of ashjmac studio, a contemporary Indigenous-led design practice based in Fort Erie, Niagara, Ontario. Established in 2019, the studio specializes in the creation of sculptural furniture, custom feature pieces, and public art that harmonizes cultural storytelling with functional design. Ashley J MacDonald holds an Honours degree in Furniture Craft and Design, an Advanced Diploma in Creative Problem Solving, and a Red Seal in Construction Framing, bringing a unique blend of fine art sensibilities and technical construction expertise to her work. Her diverse professional background spans construction, theatre, and luxury furniture across Canada and the United States. Through ashjmac studio, she addresses the lack of contemporary Indigenous design in the built environment, focusing on shape, material, and proportion. The studio's portfolio includes distinctive ready-to-ship items such as the Remi robot, Chill Pill medicine cabinet, and Nightwater table, as well as large-scale public installations and contract furnishings. Ashley J MacDonald’s work has been recognized at major design events including IDS Toronto and NYC X Design Week, and has been featured in publications like the Globe and Mail. Her design philosophy emphasizes creating an emotional bond through storytelling, celebrating daily rituals with form-driven functional pieces that reflect her urban Indigenous roots.
