Axel Plöger - Contemporary Painter and Visual Artist
Axel Plöger is a contemporary painter and lecturer based in Detmold, Germany, where he has maintained his studio for over twenty years. His artistic journey includes a formal education in fine arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HbK) Kassel under professors Dorothee von Windheim and Urs Lüthi, followed by a significant six-year period living and working as an artist in Lima, Peru. This international experience informs his abstract approach, which is rooted in the fundamental concepts of improvisation and motivation. Axel Plöger describes his practice as a dialogue between himself and the canvas, often working in distinct sessions where he adds evolving lines, structures, and surfaces without immediate correction. This process results in multi-layered works on canvas and paper that reveal complex pictorial spaces where time and color converge. Notable series such as Dances, Forest pieces, and Insomnia showcase his ability to navigate between vibrant, vital palettes and more introspective, muted tones. Beyond his studio work, he is an active educator, serving as a lecturer for painting at various institutions including the Kunstakademie Bad Reichenhall, the Sommerakademie Schwalenberg, and the Alanus Werkhaus. His portfolio is characterized by a deep belief in the truth of painting and a commitment to making the essential visible through the act of creating his expressive visual narratives.
