Andrej Babenko | Contemporary Visual Art & Performance
Andrej Babenko is a distinguished contemporary visual artist based in Antwerp, Belgium, whose career spans over 25 years. Born in Boyarka, Ukraine, his artistic journey began in the 1980s under the influence of Soviet propaganda and underground rock culture, eventually leading him to study at the Karel de Grote Hogeschool and the University of the West of England. His signature style is a powerful fusion of classical oil painting techniques with the raw energy of punk, graffiti, and street art, often described by critics as a “volcano of emotion.” Babenko’s work is deeply rooted in social and existential themes, addressing issues such as identity, alienation, and the resilience of the human spirit. He gained significant international attention for his monumental piece "Fata Morgana," which reflects on the complexities of the geopolitical situation in Ukraine. His multidisciplinary approach often extends into live performances, where he collaborates with renowned figures such as musician Mauro Pawlowski and psychiatrist Dirk De Wachter, blending live painting with music and spoken word. In addition to his studio practice, Andrej Babenko is actively involved in cultural and humanitarian initiatives. His artwork has been featured at NATO Headquarters to commemorate the resilience of the Ukrainian people and has been exhibited in prestigious venues including S.M.A.K. Ghent, Extra City Antwerp, and the Tate Modern in London. By bridging the gap between traditional fine art and contemporary digital influence, Babenko continues to be a prominent voice in the Belgian and international art scenes.
