Darcie Book | Sculptural Painting and Contemporary Art Installations
Darcie Book is a multidisciplinary artist based in Austin, Texas, renowned for her unique exploration of paint as both object and architecture. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Darcie Book has developed a signature style termed sculptural painting. This practice involves manipulating acrylic paint and metal leaf into physical, three-dimensional forms that break away from traditional flat substrates. Her work is deeply interested in the heightened physicality of materials, aiming to generate a corporeal resonance that elicits desire or longing from the viewer. The artistic practice of Darcie Book spans various formats, including amorphous paintings, panel-based works, and large-scale site-specific installations. Notable projects like The Land Stares Back and Borderless: Together Outside reflect her ongoing investigation into the complex human relationship with the land and environmentalism. She frequently uses architectural elements to frame her work, creating a dialogue between the art and the space it occupies. As an active member of the art community, Darcie Book co-founded Crit Nites in Austin and is a member of the ICOSA artist-run gallery. Her work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Baltimore Museum of Art and has been featured in Sculpture Magazine. Through her innovative use of material and process, Darcie Book continues to push the boundaries of contemporary painting, creating immersive and joyful experiences that foster connection and audience engagement.
