Erratum: Nomadic Curatorial Project and Independent Art Platform
Erratum is a prominent artist-run non-profit organization and nomadic curatorial project based in Berlin. Originally established as a physical gallery space in Berlin Kreuzberg between 2012 and 2022, the project was founded by artists James Verhille, Fiona Valentine Thomann, and Damien Sayer before passing into the leadership of artist and curator Katya Quel. In 2022, Erratum shifted its strategy to become a curatorial nomad, moving away from a fixed location to embrace mobility as a way to foster site-specific dialogues and reach new communities. Under the direction of Katya Quel, Erratum focuses on supporting independent, non-commercial artistic practices and underground cultures that exist outside of traditional institutional gatekeeping. The project places a particular emphasis on prioritizing female artists and underrepresented minorities, creating a platform for voices that challenge systemic structures. Erratum is known for its experimental and collaborative approach to exhibition-making, often exploring themes related to digital culture, sustainability, and experimental living. Key exhibitions such as The Slime Knows and Kaugummi im Motherboard 2.0 exemplify the project’s interest in complex systems and speculative futures. The Slime Knows explored decentralized intelligence and biological ecosystems, while Kaugummi im Motherboard used glitched aesthetics and the metaphor of a motherboard repaired with chewing gum to reflect on resilience and human acts of repair within failing systems. By operating as a mobile platform, Erratum continues to redefine the boundaries of what an art space can be, facilitating encounters and exchanges in diverse urban locations throughout Berlin.
