Foto Femme United: Empowering Women and Non-Binary Photographers
Foto Femme United is an international photography collective and startup established and based in Paris, France. The organization's multi-layered mission focuses on fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion for female and non-binary photographers on a global scale. By actively challenging the white male gaze that has historically dominated the industry, Foto Femme United provides a platform for voices that have been underrepresented in the arts. The community is comprised of members from various countries including France, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Brazil, and the USA, representing a wide array of nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Led by a dedicated team including founder April Wiser and contributors like Emma Hogan and Ora Nava, the platform features a diverse range of photographic genres such as fine art, fashion, photojournalism, travel, and documentary photography. Foto Femme United engages its audience through a variety of channels, including editorial essays, artist interviews, and curated exhibitions. The collective also hosts contests and provides resources for professional growth, such as submission opportunities and a regular newsletter. Through its educational approach, Foto Femme United confronts stigmas surrounding feminism and female sexuality, aiming to shift the 3:1 ratio of successful male to female photographers. As an intersectional feminist platform, it strives to ensure that the art world more accurately reflects the dynamic history and presence of women and non-binary individuals in photography.
