Gerald Curtis: Interdisciplinary Art, Performance and Painting

Gerald Curtis is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in the United Kingdom whose practice seamlessly integrates painting, performance, and photography. A graduate of the Royal College of Art with an MA in Painting (Performance Pathway), Gerald Curtis focuses on self-reflective and site-responsive enquiries. His work often explores the concept of neurodivergent making, specifically drawing from his experiences with dyspraxia to investigate the relationship between bodily movement, sensory perception, and the artistic process. The artistic output of Gerald Curtis is characterized by a messy aesthetic and abstract, gestural drawings that serve as a record of physical presence over time. His projects, such as Internal Rhythms and Momentum, frequently incorporate sound design and technology, using accelerometers and contact microphones to translate the act of drawing into live sonic landscapes. This multisensory approach allows him to challenge traditional boundaries within contemporary art. Gerald Curtis has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, including notable projects like Regeneration on Hounslow Heath and performances at the Siobhan Davies Studios. His practice is deeply rooted in the dialogue between visibility and invisibility within disability arts, often resulting in works that are triggered by walks, current events, or specific environmental contexts. By combining traditional media with experimental performance strategies, Gerald Curtis continues to push the boundaries of how neurodivergent perspectives are represented in the visual arts.
