Grzegorz Stefański: Visual Artist and Filmmaker Exploring Embodiment

Grzegorz Stefański is a Polish artist-filmmaker currently based in London, whose practice operates at the intersection of choreography, psychology, and film. Born in 1983 in Człuchów, Poland, Stefański initially pursued philosophy at Jagiellonian University before transitioning into the visual arts. He furthered his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Mirosław Bałka and completed an MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His creative output primarily revolves around multi-screen video installations, film, and photography, often focusing on the physical ephemerality of gesture and repetition. These visual narratives investigate identity, the politics of embodiment, memory, and trauma. Grzegorz Stefański is particularly known for his research into mental health and post-patriarchal masculinities, as seen in his infrared video and photography series, Sleepers. His work has gained significant international recognition, with exhibitions at the Louvre Museum, the Whitechapel Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. He has been the recipient of prestigious accolades including the Ivan Juritz Prize, the Grand Prix at the Biennale of Young Art, and the Stuart Croft Foundation Award. Recent projects include the film locusts, a 2024 commission for the Imperial War Museum in partnership with the Brickworks Museum. Stefański continues to develop ambitious triptychs exploring psychological growth and relational dynamics, supported by institutions like Tokyo Arts and Space and the Sarabande Foundation.
