Hugo Martins: Documentary Photographer and Visual Artist
Hugo Martins is a distinguished independent photographer and visual artist currently based in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Born in 1978 in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Hugo Martins holds a degree in Graphic Design and a postgraduate degree in Human-Centered Design. These academic backgrounds significantly inform his photographic sensibility, blending graphic principles with deep visual storytelling. Since initiating his photographic journey in 2004, Hugo Martins has utilized the medium as a powerful visual tool to build bridges through narratives that align with relevant cultural and societal agendas in the Global South. His work primarily moves between street and documentary photography, often in dialogue with themes of identity and representation. A central highlight of his career is the publication of the photobook ODÙ in 2020, the culmination of fifteen years of research documenting life within the Feira de São Joaquim in Salvador.
