Iris De La Torre: Playful Mexican Folk Inspired Jewellery
Iris De La Torre is a Mexican-born designer specializing in colourful, playful jewellery and graphic accessories. Based in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, she draws profound inspiration from the vibrant Folk Arts and Crafts of her native Guadalajara, Mexico, alongside the geometric magic of 1960s graphic design. After moving to London in 2003, she refined her craft at London Metropolitan University and Central Saint Martins. Her work is characterized by the use of non-traditional materials such as Perspex acrylic sheet, rubber, and plastic, which she chooses for their ability to translate bold graphic illustrations into wearable art. Sustainability is central to her practice; she utilizes recyclable Perspex and plans her production carefully to minimize waste. Iris De La Torre hand-assembles every piece in her United Kingdom studio, ensuring each object possesses longevity and a unique narrative. Her portfolio includes notable collaborations, such as exclusive ranges for the V&A Museum inspired by Frida Kahlo. Pieces like the 'Antonio the Golden Sun' brooch reflect her signature style—an innovative blend of cultural identity, historical research, and modern aesthetic simplicity that aims to evoke joy and optimism in the wearer.
