Jonathan Freemantle is a South African artist currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland, whose work is defined by an intimate understanding of painting and art history. Born in Cape Town in 1978, he underwent a rigorous five-year apprenticeship at St Oswald's Academy in London, specializing in traditional drawing, painting, sculpture, and geometry. This foundational training continues to inform his sophisticated approach to fine art, where he investigates the intricate relationships between time, the human body, and the earth. The artistic practice of Jonathan Freemantle is notably immersive and meditative. He often incorporates physical elements of the landscape directly into his work, utilizing natural materials such as mountain rocks, ochre, and egg tempera.
