Léa Michaëlis: Independent Photographer and Visual Storyteller
Lea Michaelis is a prominent French photographer and visual artist whose work focuses on documenting social realities, intimate relationships, and activist movements. She has gained international recognition for her ability to capture raw, authentic narratives that challenge societal norms and provide visibility to marginalized communities. Her professional practice spans photojournalism, portraiture, and long-term documentary projects that blend artistic sensitivity with sociological depth. One of her most significant work is "Sapphic Lovers," a project developed between 2021 and 2024. This extensive series documents the lives and love stories of lesbian and sapphic couples across France, Switzerland and Belgium. By photographing couples in both their private domestic spheres and public spaces, Lea Michaelis creates a vital visual archive of queer existence in a society where heterosexuality is often over-represented. The project culminated in a book published by Hachette in 2024. Lea Michaelis also documented the feminist street movement in her collaboration "Notre colere sur vos murs" published by Editions Denoel. This work chronicles the history of feminist collages through powerful imagery that captures the urgency of street activism. Her photographs have been featured in major publications such as Vogue, Konbini, El Pas, and Elle. Represented by the press agency REA, her work aims to preserve the memory of contemporary social struggles and personal identities.
