Marcelo Guimarães Lima: Visual Artist and Scholar in Drawing and Art History

Marcelo Guimarães Lima is a multifaceted artist and scholar based in São Paulo, Brazil. His professional practice spans several decades, encompassing visual art, writing, and higher education. With an academic foundation including a PhD in Art History and an MFA from the University of New Mexico, as well as philosophical studies at the University of São Paulo, his work is deeply informed by both theory and practice. His artistic disciplines include drawing, printmaking, painting, and digital art, through which he explores expressive and figurative styles. A significant focus of his recent work is the Bestiary Series, which revisits the ancient tradition of animal representation with primal marks that seek to capture vitality and communication. Beyond his studio practice, Marcelo Guimarães Lima has a significant academic presence, having taught at institutions such as the University of Illinois and the American University in Dubai. He currently directs the Núcleo de Artes do Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas Armando de Oliveira Souza (CEPAOS). His research often delves into the psychology of art and the significance of drawing in early childhood education. His works are held in prestigious public collections, including the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da USP and the Cabinet des Estampes in Paris and Geneva.
