Mark Sturkenboom: Conceptual Artist and Intentional Designer

Mark Sturkenboom is an Utrecht-based conceptual artist and designer whose work transcends traditional boundaries by exploring the profound emotional layers between objects and their owners. Originally trained as a welder and fabricator, Mark Sturkenboom brought a deep understanding of materials and craftsmanship to his artistic practice before graduating with honors from Artez Institute for the Arts in Arnhem in 2012. He describes his approach as creating "intentional objects," aligning with the Oxford English Dictionary's definition of design as purpose or intention behind a material object. Throughout his career, Mark Sturkenboom has gained international recognition for works that balance absurd humor with a fierce will to express. His project "21 Grams" is a poignant exploration of grief, featuring a memory box that serves as a modern urn, music player, and fragrance diffuser, designed to preserve the essence of a loved one. Another significant piece, "Ark," acts as a 21st-century time capsule, inviting the owner to store a singular precious item within a protective glass bubble and leather box. His work "Watching Time Fly By" offers a satirical take on the passage of time, featuring a fly constructed from a 500 euro bill that circles a glass dome every minute. Mark Sturkenboom’s creations are part of numerous public and private collections and have been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Limburgs Museum, Galerie Philia, and Tools Gallery Paris. By setting products free from their conventional uses, he calls forward myriad associations that stimulate thinking about life’s deepest values. His aesthetic is marked by clean lines and a sensitive palette, resisting clutter to focus on the clarity of a single memory or statement.
