Rachel Milne: Contemporary Oil Painter & Fine Artist
Rachel Milne is a professional contemporary artist whose practice is centered on the tradition of oil painting, with a specific focus on capturing the subtle beauty of domestic and studio environments. Originally from Cambridge, England, she relocated to Newcastle, Australia, in 2013. Her work is characterized by a keen observation of light, atmosphere, and the 'everyday clutter' that defines lived-in spaces. Rachel Milne’s portfolio includes diverse genres ranging from large-scale room paintings to intimate portraits and still life compositions. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Cardiff University and has established a significant presence in the Australian art scene. Her artistic achievements include winning the 2022 Muswellbrook Painting Prize and the Singleton Portrait Prize. Additionally, she has been a finalist in prestigious awards such as the Wynne Prize, the Kilgour Prize, the Portia Geach Memorial Award, and the Salon des Refusés. Her work has been showcased in major solo exhibitions, including a 2021 presentation at the Newcastle Art Gallery, and she regularly exhibits with professional galleries. Milne’s approach often involves painting from life, allowing her to translate the immediate experience of texture and shadow directly onto the canvas, elevating mundane subjects into significant artistic studies.
