Regarding Relations: A Design Practice Centered on Relationality
Regarding Relations is a design practice centered on relationality and the exploration of identity through pure forms and minimal interventions. Based in Berlin, Germany, the practice is led by Anoe Melliou, who designs, handcrafts, and assembles each piece in the collection. The work adopts a critical approach toward normative systems, viewing identity as a situated and performative concept that is continuously redefined by acts of becoming. A cornerstone of the Regarding Relations aesthetic is the Subjective Space collection, which is deeply informed by readings exploring the concept of finality. This collection features objects that remain in a state of tension between interruption and continuity, actively inviting rearrangement by the user. Key pieces such as the Arc Annex modular vases and the Tangency and Apollonius candle holders utilize modular configurations and magnetic points. These features allow the individual elements to orbit and shift within a larger system, reflecting the fluid nature of the relationships they represent. The practice emphasizes raw textures and visible process marks, which serve as a testament to the handcrafted nature of the production. From the substantial Asymptote side table to the more intimate Pillar vase, Regarding Relations proposes a field of relationality where every element holds the potential for transformation. By stripping objects down to their pure forms and focusing on the tactile quality of materials, the practice encourages a deeper engagement with the objects that populate our living spaces. Through this lens, Regarding Relations redefines the role of furniture and home accessories as active participants in the ongoing construction of personal and spatial identity.
