Short St Gallery: Contemporary Indigenous Australian Art

Short St Gallery, situated in the historic heart of Chinatown in Broome, Western Australia, is recognized as the premier and longest-running Indigenous art gallery in the region. Since its establishment in 1998, Short St Gallery has been dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of contemporary Indigenous Australian art. The gallery is housed in a significant heritage building that is over 100 years old and notable for being the last remaining house in the area with a traditional wind tunnel. Operating across two exhibition spaces known as the Gallery and the Bungalow, Short St Gallery presents a comprehensive collection of artworks from artists located throughout the Kimberley, Tiwi Island, the APY and NG Lands, the Central Desert, and the Pilbara. The gallery’s primary objective is to educate visitors and showcase the stylistic diversity of the various cultures that comprise the Australian landscape, from saltwater and freshwater traditions to the desert people. Short St Gallery maintains a strong commitment to ethical practices by purchasing Indigenous artworks primarily from reputable community-owned Art Centres, thereby ensuring the financial integrity and reputation of the artists are respected. It holds the distinction of being the only member of the Australian Commercial Galleries Association (ACGA) in Broome. The gallery represents both established and emerging artists, offering works in various media including painting and carving. With its deep ties to remote Indigenous communities and professional industry standing, Short St Gallery provides a vital platform for the appreciation of Indigenous culture and serves as a global gateway for collectors through its worldwide shipping services.
