Sofia Roubati is a Greek saxophonist and composer whose artistic practice is defined by a profound cross-cultural synthesis of jazz, classical, Byzantine, and Greek traditional music. Based in Athens, Roubati has established herself as a versatile figure in the contemporary music landscape, known for her ability to weave diverse cultural threads into a cohesive sonic narrative. She co-leads the quintet Yiasena alongside guitarist Özenç Duzenli, a project that explores the musical connections between Turkey, Greece, Azerbaijan, and Armenia through creative improvisation and original composition. In addition to her work with Yiasena, Sofia Roubati has released the acclaimed album Reflections, which showcases her signature style of subtle nuances and lyrical saxophone performance. Her creative reach extends beyond the concert hall into film, theater, and dance, where she has composed original scores, including the award-nominated music for Beyond the Plaques. A global collaborator, Roubati represented Greece in The Earth Orchestra, joining 197 musicians from around the world on the project Together is Beautiful. Her live performances, frequently hosted at prominent venues like the PLYFA cultural hub in Athens and during events such as Athens Music Week, are praised for their natural ease and atmospheric depth. Through her various releases and stage appearances, Sofia Roubati continues to push the boundaries of modern jazz by integrating deep-rooted traditional music with modern improvisational techniques, creating a unique and globally resonant musical identity.
