Vanessa Gibson: Lyrical Artist and Multi-Disciplinary Maker
Vanessa Gibson is a multi-disciplinary artist and maker based in Fife, Scotland, renowned for her innovative fusion of fine art and functional upcycling. She describes herself as a "lyrical artist and upcycler," a title that reflects her primary focus on transforming pre-loved furniture into "extreme upcycled" canvases. Vanessa Gibson’s work is highly distinctive for its integration of song lyrics and narrative elements, which are often woven into bold, decorative patterns. Her creative output is extensive and varied, including large-scale public sculpture commissions and street art murals that contribute to community visual landscapes. Beyond furniture and public works, Vanessa Gibson explores fashion and textile art, sewing unique clothing from upcycled fabrics and experimenting with techniques like hand batik and appliqué. She also creates "slang art" on found objects, hand-painted slang badges, and original artist books. As a former Creative Art Faculty member at a Fife high school, she brings a wealth of educational and technical expertise to her studio practice. Her work is characterized by vibrant colors, high-contrast aesthetics, and a deep commitment to breathing new life into discarded materials through expressive and narrative contemporary art.
