Yiyuan Bai is an innovative biomaterial designer, researcher, and interdisciplinary material maker who explores the profound intersections of nature, life, and sustainability. Based on her academic foundation with a Master’s degree in Textiles from the Royal College of Art in London and a Bachelor’s degree in Costume Design from Sichuan Film and Television University, she has developed a unique practice that bridges artistic expression and scientific inquiry. Her work primarily focuses on the development of sustainable materials derived from natural sources, including seaweed, herbal medicines, beans, and other biodegradable ingredients. Through projects such as A Grain Of, The Breath of Life, and The Gift of Nature, Yiyuan Bai investigates how materials can be transformed into functional products, accessories, or evocative art installations. Her approach emphasizes the intrinsic characteristics of the materials themselves, seeking to discover new possibilities for environmental wellness and circular design. As an educator and researcher, she has shared her expertise at institutions like ACG International Art Education and participated in prestigious residencies, including the Bio Lab Residency at the Centre for Materials Science & Culture. Recognition for her work includes numerous international accolades, such as the Supreme Gold Award at the Global HUA Design Award and the Silver Award at the Netherlands ARC Design.
