Yuting Chang: Contemporary Ceramic Art and Industrial Design Innovation
Yuting Chang is a contemporary ceramic artist and designer whose work bridges the gap between industrial design methodologies and traditional craftsmanship. Originally from Taiwan and currently based in Alexandria, Virginia, Yuting Chang is a resident artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Her artistic practice is deeply informed by her academic background, including an MFA in Design for Emerging Technologies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. One of her most significant contributions to contemporary ceramics is the Plycelain collection. This project reimagines traditional blue and white porcelain through a meticulous process of multilayered slip casting. By building up as many as twenty-nine layers of alternating colors within a mold, Yuting Chang creates functional objects where the decoration is integrated into the structure itself. The hidden patterns only become visible when the pieces are trimmed, revealing a cross-section that mimics the appearance of plywood but in fine porcelain. Yuting Chang describes her work as an exploration of the unknown possibilities between a sketch and the final piece. Her philosophy centers on unlearning the rule book, where she utilizes mass production techniques while maintaining the genuine spirit of craftsmanship. Her work has received prestigious accolades, including the Dezeen Awards 2020 Homeware Design of the Year and the Gold A' Design Award. Through her practice, she emphasizes the importance of tactile sensation and meticulous detail in a world that is increasingly digital. By creating functional ceramic objects, Yuting Chang brings the warmth of innovative craftsmanship into everyday life, fostering a deeper connection between the user and the object.
