Melissa Yunzhi Li: Computational Artist and New Media Researcher
Melissa Yunzhi Li is a computational artist whose practice spans the fields of interactive installations, web-based experiments, and immersive 3D environments. Her work critically examines the ways in which images, code, and audience participation influence the formation of identity, memory, and sense of place. Born in Chengdu and currently based in London, her artistic perspective is deeply informed by themes of displacement and the translation of intangible experiences into physical and digital spaces. Melissa Yunzhi Li often utilizes data from public image archives, 3D scans of everyday objects, and personal narratives to create site-responsive installations. Notable projects include 'Home is a dwelling path,' which explores fragmented memories of home through interactive web art, and 'Microcosm of Identity,' a biological art project blending bacterial cultivation with digital transformation. Her exhibition history includes prestigious venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Photographers' Gallery, and the Crypt Gallery. In addition to her solo practice, Melissa Yunzhi Li is active in the art community as a co-founder of the Cranberry Lemonade and Phreaking collectives, focusing on digital literacy, HTML workshops, and collaborative computational arts exhibitions. Through her practice, she invites viewers to consider how their personal histories and digital traces intertwine in shifting canvases where virtual textures merge with the material world.
