Alexandra Corcode: Romanian Documentary Photographer and Visual Storyteller
Alexandra Corcode is a Romanian visual storyteller and documentary photographer born in 2000, currently operating between The Netherlands and Romania. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and the Danish School of Media and Journalism, Alexandra Corcode focuses her practice on capturing the psychological and emotional landscapes of Romania. Her photographic work is characterized by a poetic yet dramatic style, aiming to bring awareness to overlooked social issues such as inequality, migration, poverty, and loneliness. Alexandra Corcode has received significant international recognition for her storytelling. She was awarded the Tom Stoddart Award for Excellence from the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant in 2023 and was a finalist for the Kassel Photobook Dummy Award with her book "Your Death is In My Hands." Her project "I was made to die but I'm here to stay with you" exemplifies her approach, documenting the intimate life and mutual dependence of an elderly couple in a Romanian village. Through immersive research and engagement with diverse communities, Alexandra Corcode uses the photographic medium to question territories, memories, and generational transmission. Her work has been recognized by major institutions and publications, including being named an "Emerging talent in photojournalism" by The Guardian and winning the Canon Student Development Programme. She is a member of Diversify Photo and VII Academy, reflecting her commitment to inclusivity and diverse perspectives in visual media. Her portfolio includes projects like "Intervals of Warm Absence" and has been exhibited in venues across Europe, from The Hague to Bucharest.
