Cross Street Studios Index: Cataloguing 140+ Experimental Projects in New Zealand
The Cross St Studios Index is a non-physical space dedicated to community memory and the conservation of alternative histories. We publish materials and resources related to the activity of Cross St Studios, an artist-run initiative (ARI) open from 2006 to 2010 in central Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. This project aims to preserve the 140+ exhibitions, festivals, performances, projects, screenings and workshops that unfolded within the walls of Cross St Studios and its neighbourhood, safeguarding the shared experience of the artists, musicians, organisers, participants and audiences who brought those spaces to life. It is intended for anyone interested in the experimental, collaborative, wild, and wonderful spirit of ARIs and independent creative practice in Aotearoa. The CSS Index was initiated in 2024 by Genista Jurgens, a founding member of Cross St Studios, and developed in 2025 with Joao Verissimo. It is purposely built for long-term preservation and was made possible with funding from Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.
