Dana Montlack | Interdisciplinary Biospheric Artist & Researcher
Dana Montlack is an Atlanta-based interdisciplinary biospheric artist, researcher, and educator who has spent decades exploring the intersection of art and science. Her creative practice centers on a distinctive style of layered imagery that focuses on the natural environment and ecological systems. By utilizing both micro and macro lenses, Dana Montlack captures elements of the natural world—ranging from microscopic marine cells to geological data and seafloor mapping—and transforms them into complex photographic collages. Her work is rooted in environmental storytelling, aiming to make the invisible visible. This often involves collaborating with esteemed scientific institutions, such as the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Whitney Marine Biology Research Center. Dana Montlack has exhibited her groundbreaking work in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and the California Center for the Arts. Her installations are featured in diverse public and private spaces, from hospitals and universities to the large-scale installations at the Burning Man festival. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Master of Fine Arts from Otis Parsons School of Art and Design, Dana Montlack also serves as an educator at Georgia State University. Through her art, she invites viewers to reflect on the fragility of ecosystems and the profound interconnectedness of all living things, blurring the lines between raw scientific data and sensuous abstract visual language.
