Emilie M. Houldsworth | Visual Artist & Sculptor exploring Color and Logic
Emilie M. Houldsworth is a British visual artist and sculptor currently based in London, whose interdisciplinary practice delves into the intricate relationships between colour, language, logic, and dimensionality. With an educational background that includes an MA in Textiles from the Royal College of Art and a BA in Sculpture from Edinburgh College of Art, she brings a unique perspective to material culture and pattern recognition. Her work often takes the form of abstracted, upholstered sculptures that bridge the gap between digital code and physical presence. Inspired by the minimalist renditions of colour theorist Emily Noyles Vanderpole and the objective seeing of Ellsworth Kelly, Emilie M. Houldsworth utilizes computer programming as a creative tool. This process allows her to translate blurred imagery and mathematical equations into tangible abstract entities. These pieces frequently feature complex layers of sublimation-printed velvet, encaged within utilitarian metal framing, creating a dialogue between soft textures and rigid structures. Key works in her portfolio include Signals From the Sun, Sleeping with Sherbet, and Principles of Harmony and Contrast. These projects exemplify her interest in probing the boundaries of visual and spatial perception. Her 2022 solo exhibition, RYGB, held in Bristol, further established her reputation for creating immersive installations. As a recipient of the Ameea Scholarship, she continues to push the limits of sculptural practice, aiming to elicit states of unconscious awareness through her innovative use of materials.
