Fish Factory Art Space Multidisciplinary Hub for Artists and Communities
Fish Factory Art Space is an independent, artist-led organization and Community Interest Company (CIC) based in Penryn, Cornwall. Established in 2011 by Rose Hatcher, the center has become a vital cultural fixture in the region, operating as a multifunctional creative laboratory. The facility currently resides in a former sail loft on Commercial Road, where it houses twenty-two private and shared artist studios. These workspaces support a wide range of creative practices, including painting, illustration, printmaking, and installation art. Beyond artist studios, Fish Factory Art Space provides a public-facing gallery that showcases contemporary and alternative visual arts through a rotating exhibition schedule. The hub is also equipped with specialized facilities such as a traditional black and white darkroom, a photography studio, and a communal wood workshop. A key component of the space is its welcoming vegan-friendly cafe and an independent shop that sells locally made crafts, publications, and artwork. The organization is dedicated to inclusivity and community engagement, offering a rolling residency program that attracts both local and international collaborators. It hosts a diverse calendar of events, including live music, film screenings, performance art, and hands-on workshops. By providing affordable workspace and fostering a collaborative atmosphere, Fish Factory Art Space serves as an alternative to mainstream art institutions, encouraging experimentation and professional development for creators at all stages of their careers.
