Kira McCarthy's creative work

Kira Sun McCarthy: Visual Artist and Painter in Contemporary Fine Art

Kira Sun McCarthy is a London-based Singaporean and Irish visual artist who graduated from UAL Camberwell College of Arts in 2022 with First Class Honours in Fine Art and Painting. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, photography, and film, primarily focusing on the power and potential of feminine relationships, whether sexual or platonic. Based in the UK, Kira Sun McCarthy investigates how technology acts to undermine or interrupt these intimate bonds within a capitalist and patriarchal framework. One of her notable projects, Passengers, uses motifs like mobile phones and the setting of a car to symbolize a yearning for escapism and the tensions of modern life. In addition to her studio practice, she is a practicing tattoo artist and has been represented by the online auction house AucArt. Her work has been featured in exhibitions such as Live or Die Trying in London. Through scenes of simultaneous intimacy and disconnect, Kira Sun McCarthy challenges viewers to question the stability of crucial alliances in a contemporary world. Her exploration of female connections as a tool for survival emphasizes nurture, safety, and a sense of belonging amidst increasing financial and emotional pressures.
