Kristina Shakht Visual Artist and Photographer
Kristina Shakht is a multidisciplinary visual artist and photographer currently based in New York. Born in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, in 1995, Kristina Shakht brings a profound cultural perspective to her work, which often centers on themes of identity, migration, memory, and sensuality. Her artistic journey began at a young age with a rigorous education in art school, followed by studies in linguistics and journalism, all of which inform the detailed and narrative-driven nature of her imagery. Kristina Shakht is recognized for her ability to reframe the female body from a non-sexualized, female perspective, creating a safe and liberating space for both her subjects and viewers. Her work has been showcased by the Aperture Foundation and Rockefeller Center, and her photographs have appeared in prestigious publications such as i-D, Dazed, AnOther, and the NY Times. Notable projects include "To Be or To Become," a zine exploring womanhood, and "Taking Space," a film-forward still series that investigates femme bodies in liminal spaces. Through a combination of Polaroid, 35mm film, and digital media, Kristina Shakht documents the complexities of human emotion and the landscapes of belonging. Her practice is a meditation on the nuances of existence, blending social documentary with a dreamlike, Slavic-inspired aesthetic to tell compelling stories about the modern human condition.
