Monika Romstein's creative work

Monika Romstein | Contemporary Visual Art and Figurative Painting

Monika Romstein is a distinguished visual artist living and working in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Her artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, and collage, with a particular focus on exploring psycho-emotional topographies and the vulnerability inherent in contemporary life models. Monika Romstein studied at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Scotland before completing her studies at the Städelschule in Frankfurt as a Master student of Christa Näher. The work of Monika Romstein often blurs the lines between reality and fiction, creating what she describes as a loss of reality through the use of watercolor, ink, and diverse materials such as unbaked clay, cardboard, and wood. Her art addresses hauntological aspects of the everyday and narratives that lead to a more hallucinatory reality. Monika Romstein has received numerous accolades, including the 2024/2025 Atelierstipendium from the City of Frankfurt and fellowships from the DAAD and the Künstlerhaus Salzburg. Throughout her career, Monika Romstein has presented her work in significant solo and group exhibitions across Europe and beyond, including venues in Berlin, Vienna, Bologna, Dubai, and Glasgow. Her multidimensional approach and interest in the temporality of materials have established her as a unique voice in the contemporary art scene, where her paintings and installations exist on an equal footing to challenge aesthetic hierarchies.
