Romain Coppin: Experimental Furniture and Spatial Object Design
Romain Coppin is a French visual artist and designer based between Saint-Etienne and Lyon. His practice is defined by a deep investigation into the boundaries between functional objects and non-functional sculpture. Romain Coppin frequently utilizes a collage-based approach to design, repurposing materials and found objects to create what he describes as mental furniture. This experimental methodology allows Romain Coppin to challenge the highly polished nature of mass-produced design, favoring instead a language of texture, ambiguity, and structural exploration. Romain Coppin is notably one half of the collaborative duo Messgewand, alongside Alexis Bondoux. Together, they have produced collections that emphasize maximalism and radical materiality. Individually, the work of Romain Coppin spans multiple mediums, including oil painting—as seen in his 2025 work Syndrome—and spatial installations. His portfolio includes significant projects such as Cactus, S.M.O, and Table de travail, which demonstrate a commitment to rethinking domestic space through artistic intervention. By integrating industrial processes with a sculptural sensibility, Romain Coppin creates artifacts that oscillate between the sacred and the everyday. His work has been recognized in major design publications and international residencies, solidifying the reputation of Romain Coppin as a critical voice in contemporary object design and visual arts.
