Şahsenem Altıparmak: Contemporary New Media and Video Art Installations

Şahsenem Altıparmak is a contemporary artist based in Istanbul, Turkey, whose practice centers on the profound impact of digital technologies on our perception of memory, time, and space. Working primarily across video and interactive media, Altıparmak explores the temporal continuity of both personal and collective memory. Her artistic approach involves bringing together archival objects, digital data, and technological devices to construct alternative contexts around themes of resistance and transformation between the past and future. One of her notable installations, Memory of Network, utilizes a series of mobile phones to probe the memory of the digital era. These once-functional devices are presented as carriers of personal memory and overlooked archival artifacts on the verge of disappearance, holding potential traces of deleted messages and unrecorded images. In another project, Story Archives, Altıparmak examines the visual narratives created through her usage of social media platforms, transforming digital activity into monthly tables that reveal a new language once the traditional timeline is removed. Her work has been featured in significant exhibitions such as the Zilberman Gallery's Young Fresh Different and the Mamut Art Project.
