Balázs Telegdi: Award-Winning Contemporary Glass Artist
Balázs Telegdi is an acclaimed Hungarian glass artist whose practice is defined by a deep engagement with the material qualities of glass. He approaches his craft as a continuous conversation between the maker and the molten mass, seeking out unexpected responses and nuances within the material. Telegdi’s philosophy embraces material experiments, where he often explores unadvised or forbidden techniques to uncover new expressions. His works, which range from simple shapes to intricate material textures, are born from a process of trial-and-error, where failures are embraced as essential steps toward innovation. Educated at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest and the Royal Danish Academy, Balázs Telegdi combines a rigorous technical background from traditional glassblowing factories with a free, experimental artistic intuition developed abroad. His technical mastery is evident in collections such as Feather, Distorted, Encapsulated, and Through the Scope. The artist often constructs specialized equipment to achieve his unique visions, merging art with scientific inquiry into physics and chemistry. Telegdi’s excellence in the field has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the first place at the Stanislav Libensky Award in 2021 and second place at TRACE 2024. His work has been exhibited internationally at prominent venues such as Venice Glass Week, the London Glassblowing Gallery, and the Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade. Based in Budapest and Szentendre, he is also the founder of Telegdiglass studio, aiming to foster a community for future generations of glass artists where they can experiment freely and improve the contemporary glass scene.
