The START Foundation Trust: Cultivating Creativity and Art Education

The START Foundation Trust is a dedicated nonprofit organization based in Lusaka, Zambia, focused on transforming lives through the universal language of creativity. Established by founders including Paula Sachar and Claire Chan, the trust aims to make art education inclusive and accessible to underserved communities. The START Foundation Trust operates a multifaceted approach to community development, primarily focusing on two groups: disadvantaged children and emerging contemporary artists. For children, particularly in regions like Mfuwe, The START Foundation Trust provides essential resources, clothing, and education, often supporting orphans and children from vulnerable backgrounds. Their art workshops foster imagination and build confidence, helping young participants grow into successful young adults. For artists, the trust offers a robust mentorship and training program designed to nurture talent and provide professional guidance. A significant portion of the funding for The START Foundation Trust is generated through the 37d Gallery, where commissions from art sales directly support outreach projects and the stART scholarship program. This scholarship program is merit-based, providing Zambian students with the opportunity to pursue university-level education by covering tuition fees and educational supplies. Additionally, the trust provides financial loans for national and international artist residencies, ensuring that Zambian creators can engage with the global art community. By bridging the gap between talent and opportunity, The START Foundation Trust continues to be a cornerstone of the contemporary art scene in Zambia, fostering a sustainable creative ecosystem for future generations.
