Tina Stefanou: Multidisciplinary Contemporary Art and Performance
Tina Stefanou is a prominent Greek-Australian multidisciplinary artist, performer, and researcher currently living and working on unceded Wurundjeri country in Wattle Glen, Victoria, near Melbourne, Australia. Her artistic practice is characterized by an undisciplined approach that seamlessly traverses performance, sound, moving image, sculpture, and social practice. Stefanou’s work is deeply informed by her diasporic and working-class heritage, often centering on themes of multispecies relations, labor, and ecological narratives. A central element of her methodology is the exploration of the voice in the expanded field, where she utilizes her background as a vocalist to investigate communication and presence beyond traditional human-centric boundaries. Throughout her career, Tina Stefanou has developed long-term collaborative projects involving diverse communities, including an ongoing relationship with a herd of elderly horses and various regional groups across Australia. Her work has been showcased at significant institutions such as the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the Adelaide Biennial. She frequently employs ethnographic research to ground her projects in specific sites and cultural contexts, creating immersive environments that prompt reflection on social and environmental connectivity. As a PhD candidate at the Victorian College of the Arts, Stefanou continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art through site-specific interventions and multi-sensory storytelling.
