UR-MU: One-of-a-Kind Private Contemporary Art Museum Experience

UR-MU, the Urban Museum, is a distinctive private contemporary art museum located in the Bukit Bintang district of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Established in May 2022, it is the passion project of an award-winning architect and art patron who has been acquiring Malaysian and regional works since the 1980s. The museum is housed in a purpose-built space within a bohemian neighborhood known for its 1950s modernist architecture. UR-MU features a notable collection across ten themed gallery spaces: Sens-Asia, People, Kampung Kita, Power Play, Raksasa (Monsters), Superheroes, Framing Modernity, Structure, Made’s Garden, and the Sculpture Lounge. Each gallery reflects the collector’s interests and conveys the aspirations and moods of the city and region. The collection is eclectic, ranging from fine art to quirky objects, providing a comprehensive look at regional contemporary culture. Beyond its indoor galleries, the museum includes a rooftop sculpture garden with views of the Menara Kuala Lumpur and a Balinese garden dedicated to landscape maestro Pak Made Wijaya. UR-MU operates across multiple locations, including Bukit Bintang and Raja Chulan. It serves as a cultural hub for art enthusiasts, offering community events like board game nights and unique promotions like the ArtBite! deal. The museum emphasizes accessibility, featuring lifts across all five floors, and aims to provide an inspiring space where visitors can digest and ponder art in a modern urban context.
